Learn How to Create Sigils!

Merry meet and Blessed be, guys! Today’s post I’m going to let you in on how do my sigils! Now, I’ll preface this by saying that I actually have been known to use three separate methods. I tend to unapologetically switch and merge them, as the mood strikes me. Sigils have always been intensely interesting to me, that sort of set-it-and-forget-it spell-work is tempting. The problem is that I can’t let things go, or forget things on demand. Which is integral to Chaos Magick, per my very basic understanding.

The three methods I tend to bounce between are the basic number grid method, planetary grids, and just trying to use the shapes to make something pretty. That third one, is by far the most difficult for me. Because I tend to be more methodical in my approach to some things. I have a lot of difficulty thinking outside the box, and just smashing things together. It might be easier for you, so definitely give it a try!

Method 1 of Making Sigils.

This method is by far the simplest, you take a focus phrase for your intent. Always pick something in the present tense, otherwise you can invite uncertainty into your work. I have chosen “I HAVE HEALTH AND PROSPERITY” for my focus phrase here. If I had said “I will have health and prosperity”, it’s putting to the universe that I currently do not have it which may attract that outcome or make the sigil ineffective.

There are a couple different ways you can do this. I usually, remove the vowels and repeat consonants and duplicate numbers, which would leave me with “HVLTNPRS” which is 84325791 if you use the accompanying numerology chart above.

The other way is to keep all characters, while just removing the repeated numbers, that would leave me with IHAVELTPO or 981453276. Now that we have all of the numbers situated, we’re going to put them on a grid. With this method, I use a simple 9 grid. You can see this process in the below image.

Method 2 of Making Sigils.

This is a method that is relatively new to me, I’ve recently gotten into writing all of the correspondences for everything. My newest technique is planetary grids, or magic squares. Each planet has its own correspondences and grid, and as such using these grids pulls in the association of the planet it aligns with. You can check out the grids here. For this example, I’ve decided on the Jupiter grid. I’ve chosen “I AM DILIGENT IN MY CRAFT” for my focus phrase. The Jupiter Grid is good for this goal since Personal growth is its domain.

For this method, I tend to only remove duplicate numbers. Which would leave me with  IAMLGETF, which boils down to 91437526.

I’ve seen some people who keep their duplicate numbers, and pretty much do the entire phrase regardless by adding little bumps or loops to the repeats. I just can’t get any pleasing looking sigils when I do that. I’ve added a look at the process below!

Method 3 of Making Sigils.

This one is the hardest for me to do, personally. I have a few sigils I’ve been able to make in this technique, but I have to be in a very particular creative zone to be able to work these sorts of sigils. You can start this two ways.

  1. This first way is to perform deconstruction on the characters themselves. Whether you remove the vowels and repeated characters is up to you. Once the characters are torn apart, you use the pieces you like.
  2. One of my good friends uses this method, and it is to stack the letters on one another and just warp and move things until you’re happy with it.

For this one, I used the phrase “I HAVE A HAPPY MARRIAGE”, you can see below that I kept it really simple, except for my little flower doodle where I was able to throw in a few lines to behave as some other piece. I really like simplicity in these particular sigils. I’ve included my personal sigils in the picture so you can kind of see what I mean. The sigils below are for Adventure, Harmony, Prosperity, Protection and to attract a specific type of job. Can you tell which is which?

Sigils; method 3

At the top I deconstructed the letters and then checked off the ones that I had used, I don’t know if that’s needed, but I like to do that.

The Extras!

One thing I’ve really taken to doing here lately, since getting my brand new set of Obsidian runes and reigniting my interest in them, is incorporating Runes into my sigils. You can check out this one down below for example. For this, I used a short, clear focus phrase “LONG, HAPPY MARRIAGE” and used Jupiter’s grid to make the below sigil. I like to curve my lines sometimes to add a little visual interest and I felt like this one could do with some banners.

Rune Spell Sigil

I used Berkana (ᛒ), Eiwaz (ᛇ), Kenaz (ᚲ) and Othala (ᛟ). These runes together speak of new beginnings, regeneration (healing, in this context), Light & Creativity, and Tradition. The runes have different keywords, but as with everything in the magick realm, it all boils down to intent.

Like with most things in the magick realm, follow your instinct. If you want to do a different method, add a shape that’s not accounted for in your focus phrase or just plain add wild emotional scribbles, follow what feels right. There’s no one singular right way in witchcraft.

I leave this here for now. If you guys have any questions, feel free to comment or contact me via the contact form!
